Pregnancy Care in Jaipur: Checkups for Every Trimester

Pregnancy Care in Jaipur: Important Checkups for Every Trimester

“I feel totally normal that the baby is moving. Why do I need to have an appointment?” This is one thing many women in Jaipur say  and it is understandable. If you are feeling good, you don't need to go to the doctor.
Well, the truth is that the biggest and most serious challenges to pregnancy seem insignificant. There is no pain, there is no headache and no warning of high blood pressure during pregnancy until it gets very bad. Gestational diabetes runs like a normal pregnancy, until the baby becomes too large to be born safely. The placement of the placenta is not necessarily painful and there is no sign of it until it creates a dangerous bleed.
In this blog about Pregnancy Care in Jaipur we learn about how each visit to the doctor during pregnancy is designed to detect and prevent health issues to help you have a safe delivery and have a healthy baby. Along with this we will also find out about selecting the best pregnancy care hospital in Jaipur.

Find out what you can expect at each stage of the checkup.

The First Visit: Within First 3 Months

The first appointment a woman from India makes with a gynecologist in Jaipur (or a trusted pregnancy doctor in Jaipur) is at 3 to 4 months. However, the first visit should take place prior to 12 weeks. That's because there is a reason for the timing.
This is the very first time when you go to know your blood group. Some time during the pregnancy, if you have a Rh-negative blood type, you will receive a special dose. If this is not discovered, it can cause a serious problem in future pregnancies. It can be entirely prevented by a simple blood test at the proper time.
The first visit also checks your thyroid. The baby requires thyroid hormone from the mother for the first few months (when it has not yet developed its own thyroid). When the mother's thyroid doesn't function well, and no one notices, it can subtly impact the baby's brain development. That is why it is worth it to do a test that requires 5 minutes to do and 2 hours to get the result before 12 weeks.

Pregnancy Scan at 18 Weeks

This is the special name for this scan: Anomaly scan. Most people refer to it as the "Level 2 scan. It is performed at 18-20 weeks  not at 22 weeks, not at 24 weeks.
The doctor during this scan will examine the baby's brain, spine, heart (all four chambers), kidneys, lips, limbs and abdominal wall. One by one. When things aren't going as they should, this is the time that it is observed.
This scan will also indicate the position of the placenta. Placenta praevia is when the placenta is blocking the baby's way out of the uterus through the cervix. It is only with this scan that it can be located. Women who have placenta previa should have a planned c-section  and the hospital should already be aware of this, not at the time of delivery.

Why is that 18-20 weeks?

Some information found on this scan will need decisions with time limits. Some of those windows are closed once you wait until 24 or 25 weeks to do this scan. This scan is not as helpful as the 18 week scan. Make an appointment for this scan, don't miss it!

Gestational Diabetes - The Undetected Sugar in the Womb of Pregnancy.

A blood sugar test is performed in pregnancy, between 24 and 28 weeks. This test is being done to screen for a condition known as "gestational diabetes" which is a high blood sugar condition that can occur during pregnancy in women who have not had diabetes before.

There is no pain. No dizziness. No obvious sign. You'd feel like you were no different. However, if the diabetes of pregnancy is not detected and treated, the baby may develop excessive weight, sometimes more than 4kg  and delivering the baby normally will be difficult or impossible. Babies can also experience dangerously low blood glucose immediately after birth.

All this can be detected in one simple blood test at the proper time. If this test is not completed, then it is omitted if a pregnancy appointment is missed at 24-28 weeks. The problem is discovered too late: the baby is too big. So, it is very important for pregnant women in Jaipur to adhere to the schedule and not just when there is something wrong.

Blood Pressure at every Visit: Watching for Pre-Eclampsia.

The doctor monitors blood pressure at each and every visit. This is not a routine of ticking off boxes. The only way to detect pre-eclampsia before it becomes a problem.

Pre-eclampsia is an expectant mother's blood pressure rising too high. There is no pain. No warning feeling. In some cases, there will be no symptoms other than an elevated blood pressure. The doctor observes the trend, not only the number this day, but if it is increasing.

If left unrecognized and untreated, pre-eclampsia may lead to a seizure during the pregnancy. This is known as eclampsia and is a serious condition that can be dangerous to the mother and the baby. It never reaches that point when blood pressure is monitored regularly.

If you see any of the following symptoms, go to the hospital right away:

  • A very strong headache that does not respond to Paracetamol.
  • Blurred vision or light flashes or spots
  • Your face and hands become suddenly swollen.
  • Upper Right Abdominal pain

These are the signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia. Avoid putting off appointments. Get immediately admitted to a maternity hospital in Jaipur that same day for comprehensive maternity care in Jaipur.

Baby Movement: A Sign You Can Monitor at Home

A healthy baby will start moving regularly, every day, starting around 28 weeks. One easy rule to follow: 10 actions in 2 hours. Kicks, rolls, jabs are all accounted for.

If the baby is moving much less than usual today   don't wait to see if it will get better. Please do not reschedule your appointment for tomorrow! Call your doctor on the same day or to the hospital. Sometimes, the first indication that the baby is not getting enough oxygen is a decrease in motion. It's one of those warnings that's given on time enough to do something about it  if you do something about it within the same day.

Preparations for Final Month of Pregnancy

These are some of the final activities that need to be done before delivery. Visits are conducted weekly in the final weeks before the due date. At this stage the doctor is inspecting:

  • Is the baby head down? This is a natural phenomenon most babies will do. Otherwise, some methods will have to be used or a planned Caesarean.
  • Do you notice any softening of the cervix and preparation? This will indicate to the doctor if it is likely that labour will occur naturally in the near future.
  • Does the baby have enough water at her disposal? If the amount of fluid is too low, this is an indication that the placenta is not functioning properly and that the baby may be born prematurely.
  • The baby's heartbeat pattern (NST test). This test keeps track of the baby's heartbeat for 20 minutes. A healthy baby exhibits a predictable pattern. If the pattern is atypical, it means that the baby is in stress.

Conclusion

All prenatal visits serve a purpose. Blood pressure is measured at each visit as there is no other warning prior to pre-eclampsia becoming dangerous. The 18 week scan occurs in a particular window of time because the window is closing. This 24-week blood test is a test for gestational diabetes which may not have any symptoms. There are no "probable" problems. They can only be found through the checkup!

Eight antenatal contacts are recommended by WHO. In practice, this means: before 12 weeks, monthly visits until the second trimester, weekly visits until 28 weeks and then visits every 2 weeks until the end of pregnancy, and finally weekly visits in the last month. If you are a woman who is at high risk for pregnancy for example, if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, twins, or problems in your past pregnancies you will need to visit more often. The schedule is based on the time when problems are likely to occur, not around your feelings.

No. That's why the schedule is in place. These problems (pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, wrong placenta position, poor baby growth) don't have any symptoms. You're just fine and dandy as they grow silently. If you feel fine, it doesn't mean that your blood pressure has been normal, your baby is normal or your placenta is in the normal position. The pregnancy checkup schedule is a test to discover things that you can't feel.

A detailed ultrasound is made between 18 and 20 weeks, known as the anomaly scan. It scans each organ of the baby, brain, heart, spine, kidneys, lips, limbs. It also indicates the location of the placenta. This scan should be performed at 18-20 weeks and it is less useful when performed at 22-25 weeks because some decisions made from the information obtained are time specific. Please schedule this appointment in advance and do come!

Typically, pre-eclampsia doesn't show up until the later stages, so the blood pressure is taken at each appointment. When serious, it develops symptoms such as: a severe headache which is not relieved by paracetamol, blurring of vision or flashes of light or spots, sudden swelling of face and hands, and upper right abdominal pain. If any of these occurs, discard the same day and do not wait till the next scheduled appointment for the best pregnancy care hospital Jaipur or a specialized pregnancy hospital in jaipur.
